Backup power that buys you time, not just a beep
When mains power fails, the cost is rarely the electricity. It is the corrupted database, the CCTV gap during the incident, the production line that has to be re-seeded, the server that will not come back cleanly. A correctly specified uninterruptible power supply (UPS) carries the load through the outage, or at minimum holds it up long enough for a controlled shutdown.

Choosing the right UPS topology
The topology decides what your equipment actually experiences during a power event. Get this right before worrying about brand.
Standby / Line-interactive
Best for: desktops, POS terminals, routers, NVRs, small office IT and home CCTV.
Runs equipment from mains and transfers to battery when supply fails. Automatic voltage regulation (AVR) corrects the sags and brownouts common on Malaysian supply without draining the battery. There is a brief transfer time, which ordinary IT equipment tolerates without issue.
APC Back-UPS · APC Smart-UPS SMT and SMX
On-line double-conversion
Best for: servers, data rooms, medical and laboratory equipment, industrial control panels.
Continuously converts incoming AC to DC and back again, so the load is always fed from a clean, regenerated waveform. There is no transfer time and no exposure to input disturbances. This is what to specify when a momentary break is unacceptable.

Sizing a UPS to your load
Undersize it and the UPS drops the load exactly when you need it. Oversize it and you have paid for capacity that will never be used. A quick starting point:
Add roughly 20–25% headroom over your measured load to allow for growth and battery ageing. Runtime is a separate decision from capacity: if you need more than the usual 5–15 minutes, specify a long-run model with external battery packs. Send us your load schedule and we will size it for you.

What size UPS do I need?
Add up the wattage of everything the UPS must carry, then allow around 20-25% headroom for future load and battery ageing. As a rough guide: a desktop or POS terminal needs 650-1000VA, a small server or NVR with a monitor 1500-3000VA, a full comms rack 3-10kVA, and a factory or data room with three-phase supply 10kVA and above. Send us your load list and we will size it properly.
What is the difference between line-interactive and on-line UPS?
A line-interactive UPS runs your equipment from mains and switches to battery when the supply fails, correcting minor voltage swings with AVR along the way. An on-line (double-conversion) UPS continuously rebuilds the waveform, so there is no transfer time at all. Line-interactive suits offices, CCTV and general IT. Choose on-line for servers, medical and laboratory equipment, and anything sensitive to a brief break in supply.
How long will a UPS run during a blackout?
A standard UPS is designed to bridge short outages and give you a controlled shutdown, typically 5 to 15 minutes at half load. Where you need longer, specify a long-run or extended-runtime model paired with external battery packs - both the APC Easy UPS SRV -IL range and the Mycam Long Run models are built for this.
